Frederick Douglass
After escaping from slavery in Maryland, Frederick Douglass became a leader of the abolitionist movement known for his oratorial skill and incisive antislavery writings. A few years after the Civil War ended, Douglass came to Gettysburg to speak at Agriculture Hall, which once stood at the corner of High and Franklin streets. It was reported that he couldn’t freely roam the streets of town due to death threats, yet he delivered his speech to a packed house. He told the crowd that if Lincoln could speak about his assassins, he would say, “Father, forgive them for they know not what they do.”
