FAQ

The Union Hotel Difference

Q: Where is the hotel located?
A: Our hotel is located a half block west of Lincoln Square at 27 Chambersburg Street in downtown Gettysburg. You can’t ask for a more central location!

Q: When and how can I check in?
A: Our check-in window is from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. daily. Please note: If you believe you will be arriving after 8:00 p.m., please call us at (717) 337-1334 or email us so we can apprise you of our late check-in procedures. If you will be arriving before 3:00 p.m., we would be happy to check your bags until your suite is available. Please contact us in advance to make arrangements.

Upon arrival, please pull up in front of the hotel (we have two parking spots blocked off to regular traffic for this purpose) and enter the lobby. Look for the “Guest Check-in” sign, straight ahead to the left of the stairs. A member of our staff will assist you from there.

Q: When is check-out?
A: Check-out is at 11:00 a.m daily.

Q: Do you offer any discounts?
A: We do, indeed! We offer a 10% discount for AAA and AARP members as well as military and civilian military personnel, including veterans. To qualify, guests must present a membership card or valid government identification card upon check-in. Discounts cannot be combined.

Q: Do you accommodate group reservations?
A: Yes, we are happy to accommodate groups, including wedding parties and tour groups. Please contact us at (717) 337-1334 or inquiries@unionhotelgettysburg.com to discuss availability with our hospitality team.

Q: How does payment work?
A: On the day of your arrival, we will charge the balance of your stay to the credit card you used to secure your reservation. We accept the following credit cards: Visa, Mastercard, American Express, and Discover. Please note that for security purposes, you will be asked to provide a valid federal or state-issued photo ID card as well as a credit card upon check-in.

Q: Does the hotel have an elevator? What about parking?
A: Yes, to both! The Union Hotel features an elevator and provides free, on-site parking to guests. All guests park at their own risk; we do not accept liability for any accidents, damage, or loss incurred while parked, either in our lot or elsewhere.

Q: Is breakfast included?
A: Our guests begin their day with a complimentary breakfast basket—which includes a selection of freshly baked goodies paired with seasonal fruit and juice—to be enjoyed en suite. We also serve brunch on Saturdays and Sundays from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in our restaurant, the Sign of the Buck, which is located on the first floor of the hotel.

Q: Do you have a restaurant and bar at the hotel?
A: We do, indeed! The Sign of the Buck–a nod to the building’s original name–which debuted in August of 2023 and occupies the first floor of the hotel, serves up French food with a Pennsylvania patois seven days a week. Our thoughtfully curated menu showcases produce and meats from local farms as well as an extensive selection of craft cocktails, wine, beer, and other libations. If you’d like, you can make a reservation in the dining room via Resy or by calling our concierge at (717) 337-1334. The Buck Tavern, which is “seat yourself,” is accessible from the lobby. In addition to daily dinner and weekend brunch service, the restaurant offers lunch, Monday through Friday, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Q: Is the Union Hotel accessible?
A: We are proudly accessible, with a reserved parking spot for handicapped guests and a ramp leading from our parking lot to our wide front door. The Elizabeth Thorn Suite (301) is especially accessible, complete with an ADA-compliant bathroom.

Q: Is the hotel pet-friendly?
A: Due to the building’s historic nature and lack of green space, we aren’t able to accommodate pets, but we would be happy to provide recommendations for local boarding facilities should you need them. Service animals, of course, are welcome.

Q: Do you have quiet hours?
A: As we are a boutique hotel, we ask all guests to observe quiet hours from 10:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m.

Q: Are children welcome at your hotel?
A: Owing to our small size, we allow only children who are 12 or older to stay with us. We hope you’ll understand.

Q: How old must you be to stay at the hotel?
A: You must be 21 years old to book a room at the Union Hotel.

Q: What’s your cancellation policy?
A: Cancellations made within 48 hours of the scheduled arrival date will be subject to a charge equivalent to one night’s room rate plus applicable tax. No-shows will be charged for their entire reservation period. Please note that no credits will be given for early departures. For reservations during peak periods or special events, a longer cancellation period may apply and will be specified at the time of booking.

Q: Are there any other policies I should be aware of?
A: All room rates are set for an occupancy of two. Additional guests (including children over 12 years old) will incur a $25 fee per night, per guest. Lost keys will also incur a $25 charge. The Union Hotel is a non-smoking property and failure to comply will incur a $250 cleaning fee. The hotel also reserves the right to charge for damages, repairs, and incidentals that exceed standard housekeeping procedures.

Q: Where did the hotel get its name?
A: The hotel has been known by at least nine names since it opened as a tavern and boarding house called the Sign of the Buck in 1804. The new owners thought that among the many names it has had over its long history, the Union Hotel, which is what the building was known as during the Civil War, fit their vision best. “Gettysburg was a Union town then and it’s a Union town now,” owner Leslie Trew Magraw says. “We should all be striving to live up to the ideals that Gettysburg—with Lincoln’s famous address—was destined to become a symbol for: peace and reconciliation.”

Q: Can someone at the hotel help us figure out what to do and where to eat?
A: We are here to make your visit memorable. Our knowledgeable hospitality team members have years of experience in the innkeeping business and would be happy to recommend restaurants, activities, and special events in town. Just ask!
