Basil Biggs
Basil Biggs was a free Black man living on the outskirts of Gettysburg when the Civil War began. A tenant farmer known for his veterinary skill—and likely an agent of the Underground Railroad—Biggs was responsible for exhuming thousands of Union soldiers in Gettysburg National Cemetery after the battle that was fought here. He was also a member of the Sons of Goodwill, which founded Lincoln Cemetery, where Gettysburg’s Black veterans could be buried, as they were—in a lamentable twist of irony—not permitted in Soldiers’ National Cemetery.
