Elizabeth Thorn
When the Civil War began, Elizabeth Thorn’s husband, Peter, was the caretaker of Evergreen Cemetery. But once he decided to enlist with the Union army in 1862, Elizabeth took over his duties. In the three weeks following the battle she dug nearly 100 graves as the smoke cleared—with little compensation and while she was six months pregnant. When her daughter was born, she named her Rose Meade Thorn, after the Union Army of the Potomac’s commander.
