James McAllister

Committed abolitionist James McAllister owned a mill south of Gettysburg that he offered up for use as a key Underground Railroad outpost mere miles from the Mason-Dixon line. Fugitive slaves seeking freedom would hide in the cog pit of the mill, relatively safe from slave catchers while they rested for the next leg of their journey north to freedom. The McAllister farm was just behind the Union lines of the fighting at Culp’s Hill and Spangler’s Spring and was used as a hospital during and after the battle.
