Lloyd Watts
Lloyd Watts proudly served with Company B of the 24th U.S. Colored Troops during the Civil War, where he guarded Confederate prisoners at Cape Lookout, Maryland. After the war, he returned home to Gettysburg where he taught at the “colored school” and also served as a deacon at St. Paul’s A.M.E. Zion Church, a reconstructed version of which still stands on the south side of town. Watts also helped found Lincoln Cemetery, a burial ground for black soldiers and citizens, in 1867. He was interred there in 1918.
