Lydia Hamilton
Lydia Hamilton, a free woman of European and African descent, was born at Russell Tavern on the outskirts of Gettysburg in 1813. After separating from her husband, Jacob Smith, Lydia moved to Lancaster, where she worked as a housekeeper for Thaddeus Stevens. During and after the Battle of Gettysburg, Hamilton collected food and supplies for the wounded of both sides from neighbors and friends. Lydia, whom many considered to be Stevens’ common-law wife, was at his bedside when he died in 1868.
