Thaddeus Stevens
Thaddeus Stevens was one of the most prominent citizens of Gettysburg in the first half of the 19th century. A country lawyer by trade and an entrepreneur in spirit, Stevens preserved Pennsylvania’s public education system, became a fierce advocate for abolition, helped in the founding of what would become Gettysburg College, and went on to serve in the U.S. House of Representatives, where he was the catalyst for the ratification of the 13th and 14th Amendments to the Constitution.
