Tillie Pierce
Matilda Pierce was just 15 years old when Confederate and Union forces streamed into her town. She was one of many local women who provided food, water, and medical care to the wounded. Years later, Pierce published a harrowing account of her experiences entitled What a Girl Saw and Heard of the Battle. “The whole landscape had been changed and I felt as though we were in a strange and blighted land,” she wrote.
